Protecting Mission-Critical Healthcare Technology Without the Complexity of Traditional Cooling
How Retina Consultants of Southern Colorado Solved Server Room Overheating with EdgeCool
Retina Consultants of Southern Colorado relies on networking and IT infrastructure to support daily clinical operations, advanced retinal diagnostics, and surgical procedures.
But inside a compact 6′ × 8′ server room, the heat generated by critical IT equipment was exceeding what the building’s HVAC system could effectively manage.
When the building HVAC system reduced operation during evenings, weekends, and other periods, temperatures inside the server room began to rise. Staff were forced to leave the server room door open and use fans to help cool the equipment.
While this brought temperatures down to approximately 80°F, it introduced new concerns around equipment reliability and physical security and raised the possibility of disruptions to scheduled surgeries.
The practice needed a permanent cooling solution that could be installed quickly, protect critical infrastructure, and avoid major modifications to the facility
Challenge
A Small Room Supporting Critical Infrastructure
Although the server room was relatively compact, it housed both a network cabinet and a partially populated two-post rack containing critical infrastructure. The heat generated by this equipment consistently exceeded what the surrounding building HVAC system could effectively manage.
Infrastructure Constraints
The room’s IT equipment created a concentrated heat load that the building HVAC system wasn’t designed to address.
Security Risks
Leaving the server room door open to maintain acceptable temperatures exposed critical infrastructure to unauthorized access and created additional operational concerns for facility and IT personnel.
Healthcare Facility Considerations
Any cooling upgrade needed to minimize disruption to daily operations while providing long-term reliability. Extended construction timelines, permit requirements, and invasive building modifications were undesirable in an active healthcare environment.
Limited Time for Implementation
The practice needed a solution that could be deployed quickly rather than waiting months for engineering reviews, permits, and contractor scheduling.
Solution: Targeted Cooling. Minimal Disruption. No Major Facility Modifications.
Retina Consultants selected the EdgeCool 5 Series In-Rack Cooling System to provide targeted cooling precisely where it was needed most.
Unlike conventional room-based air conditioning, EdgeCool delivers cooling directly to the IT equipment while operating from a standard 115V electrical connection.
The system reduced the inlet temperature to the IT equipment to the low 60s, providing the dedicated cooling the critical infrastructure required.
Installation was completed by Tolin Mechanical in approximately four hours with two technicians.
Designed Around the Existing Environment
One of the advantages of the EdgeCool installation was its ability to work with the facility’s existing infrastructure rather than requiring significant building modifications.
Rack-Mounted Condenser Integration
The server cabinet had sufficient available rack space, allowing the condenser section to be installed directly within the existing rack environment. This eliminated the need to consume additional floor space.
Simplified Air Management
Warm exhaust air was ducted directly into the building’s drop ceiling. This avoided the need for rooftop equipment and extensive ductwork modifications.
Straightforward Condensate Removal
Condensate was routed to a neighboring janitorial closet using a condensate pump, avoiding costly plumbing alterations.
No Electrical Upgrades Required
An unused dedicated 115V / 20A outlet was already available inside the server room. As a result, the installation required no new circuits and no electrician.
“In a healthcare setting, if our servers go down, it’s not just an inconvenience, it can delay patient care, from pulling up records to running diagnostic equipment. The temps in our server room were regularly above 80 degrees, and we were worried about the long term wear on our server and network equipment.”
– Shenandoah Bower, Retina Consultants
“The difference with EdgeCool was immediate. Temperatures in the server room dropped and have stayed consistent, even during peak loads and summer months.”
– Adam Baart, Colorado Hi Tech Solutions
